Overview:

The mission of the Grand Rapids Rifle & Pistol Club Junior Program is to provide youth (ages 8 – 19) with the opportunity to participate in shooting sports, with an emphasis in air pistol, BB Gun, precision air rifle, rimfire pistol, smallbore rifle, and sporter air rifle. Regardless of skill or ability, all members can have a safe and enjoyable time. The program focuses on marksmanship and team comradery. All equipment is provided, including guns, ammunition, and targets.

  • Air Pistol: A 4.5 mm (.177 cal.) compressed air, CO2 or pneumatic air pistol. Only open sights are permitted. Sights using fiber optic, light enhancing or reflecting color surfaces are prohibited. Optical, mirror, telescope, laser-beam, and electronically projected dot sights etc. are prohibited.   • BB Gun: Any shoulder held smoothbore BB gun with metallic sights, in which the propelling force is developed through the use of a compressed spring, gas or compressed air. (See NRA BB Gun Rule Book for further information.)
  • Precision Air Rifle: Any type of 4.5mm (.177 caliber) pneumatic, spring air, compressed air or CO2 rifle with a muzzle velocity of 600 fps or less may be used. Rifles may have an adjustable butt-plate and an adjustable cheek-piece. (See CMP Air Rifle and Air Pistol Competition Rules for further information.)
  • Rimfire Pistol: The pistol may be either a semi-automatic pistol or a revolver. The pistol must be chambered for the .22 cal. rimfire long rifle cartridge. The pistol may have asymmetrical, orthopedic, or specially shaped grips. The pistol may have only open sights. Optical sights are not permitted.(See CMP Pistol Competition Rules for further information.)
  • Smallbore Rifle: A smallbore rifle must be chambered for .22 long rifle cartridges only. It must be single shot. Open, iron, and adjustable peep sights are permitted. (See CMP Smallbore Rifle Competition Rules for further information.)
  • Sporter Air Rifle: Sporter Air Rifle is intended to be a low cost, entry-level rifle without specialized modifications that add to the cost of the rifle. Sporter air rifles must be .177 caliber (4.5 mm) pneumatic, spring air, compressed air, or CO2 rifles with a muzzle velocity of 600 fps or less. Enrollment:

All participants are required to obtain a Junior Membership or be an identified dependent on a Family Membership. Additionally, all youth are required to enroll in Michigan 4-H (enrollment is free).

Leagues:

Members of the junior program can choose to participate in one or more leagues throughout the year.

Orion National Air Rifle League (Individual and 4 Person Teams) – The league consists of eight regular season matches (September – November) and a postseason (November – December).

National Rifle League (Individual and 4 Person Teams) – The league consists of 10 postal matches fired January – March.

Mid-State Rifle League (Individual and 4 Person Teams) – The league consists of 10 postal matches fired January – April.

Home Matches:

Members are encouraged to regularly compete in matches.

Scopos Monthly Virtual Matches – Occurs monthly.

The club participates in various other local, regional, and national matches hosted by the American Smallbore Shooting Association (ASSA), Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), Michigan 4-H, National Rifle Association (NRA), and USA Shooting (USAS) throughout the year.
